How this list is built
WorldPulse reads the USGS magnitude 2.5+ summary feed every five minutes. Nothing is filtered, re-ranked or editorialised: if the USGS published it, it appears here with the same magnitude and coordinates. GDACS provides a second alerting layer for the larger events.
What magnitude actually means
Magnitude is logarithmic: a magnitude 6 releases roughly 32 times more energy than a magnitude 5, and about 1,000 times more than a magnitude 4. Depth matters as much as magnitude — a shallow magnitude 5 close to a city can do more damage than a deep magnitude 6 under the ocean.
Getting alerted instead of checking
Checking a list means you find out when you remember to look. Adding a location to your watchlist in the WorldPulse app means a push notification when a qualifying earthquake happens near that place — your city, your family's city, somewhere you are travelling.

How many earthquakes happen each day?
Several hundred of magnitude 2.5 and above worldwide on a typical day. Most are too small or too remote to be felt. Events above magnitude 6 are far less frequent — roughly 100 to 150 a year globally.
Where does this earthquake data come from?
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) Earthquake Hazards Program, read every five minutes from its public GeoJSON feed. It is the same feed most earthquake services are built on.
Is magnitude 2.5 the smallest shown?
Yes. Smaller earthquakes are extremely numerous and rarely consequential, so the magnitude 2.5 and above feed is used.
Can I get notified about earthquakes near me?
Yes, in the WorldPulse app: add a location with a radius and a minimum severity, and you get a push notification when a qualifying earthquake occurs nearby.
