A live map of armed conflict and unrest

WorldPulse plots conflict and unrest events from the GDELT Project's raw event export, which extracts located events from world news every 15 minutes, including coordinates, CAMEO event codes and the actors involved. Curated conflict zone outlines add context for the active wars.

Events, not just headlines

Each conflict item is a located event: coordinates, the actors involved, how many news reports mentioned it, and a link to a source article. That is different from a news feed, where a story about a strike and a story about its aftermath are two separate headlines with no position on a map.

Conflict zones in context

Active conflict regions are outlined on the map with the belligerent parties' flags. Tapping a zone opens a situation report: the parties, how long it has run, a short summary, and crucially the real events recorded inside that region right now, rather than a static description.

An honest note on conflict data

GDELT derives events from news coverage, which means volume of coverage influences what surfaces, and local policing stories can occasionally be classified as conflict. WorldPulse applies a filter to reduce that noise. The commercial standard for conflict data, ACLED, requires a licence for commercial use, so it is deliberately not used here rather than used without one.

Questions

Where does the conflict data come from?

The GDELT Project's raw event export, read every 15 minutes. It extracts located events from global news coverage, with coordinates, CAMEO event codes and actor pairs.

Does WorldPulse use ACLED data?

No. ACLED is the sector standard but requires a licence for commercial use. Rather than use it without one, WorldPulse relies on GDELT and labels its origin clearly.

Does WorldPulse track military aircraft or warships?

No. Some apps in this category advertise live military tracking; WorldPulse does not currently do this and does not claim to.
